This series combines narrative and still life paintings that encapsulate the warmth, humor, and fun of a night spent with family. I love telling a story and making my audience laugh. I treat the canvas as my diary, and love to hide little pieces of myself inside each and every work. For “Family Game Night”, the goal was to give the viewer an intimate view into some of my most cherished family memories. Growing up, often the only times my family could all be together in the same room were holidays or times of loss. In those moments, we would come together over a tiny dining room table to laugh and spend what precious little time we had bonding over board games. We genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. These activities quickly became a tradition, and one that we hold onto still.
Formally, I designed this series to be bright and bold, with colors bouncing off the surface. These works are meant to delight the viewer, and mimic the technicolor world in which our memories reside. This series combines both narrative and still life paintings. The large, narrative works are an autobiographical look into my personal experiences, while the still life paintings allow the viewer to create their own narrative, and connect the images with memories of their own. Game pieces, playing cards, brightly colored boards - all of these objects are so mundane but can hold so much meaning to the person who views them. My hope for these works is to connect with the audience and share in the warmth of my personal memories, while invoking some memories within the viewer as well.
